657 medical devices earn breakthrough designation, 71 for orthopedics

Since its inception in 2015, the FDA’s breakthrough designation has been awarded to 657 products across 19 areas. Orthopedics is among the top-earning specialties.

Breakthrough designation is given to devices that provide for more effective treatment or diagnosis of life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating diseases or conditions, according to the FDA. The three areas with the most breakthrough designations are cardiology, neurology and orthopedics.
