Stryker faces 3rd bribery investigation

Orthopedic

Orthopedic medical device manufacturer Stryker is under investigation by U.S. authorities for potential anti-bribery law violations, according to a May 3 report from The Wall Street Journal.

This is the company's third bribery investigation since 2013, when it paid $13.3 million in settlements with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It paid an additional $7.8 million to settle allegations in 2018.

Stryker is under investigation from both the U.S. Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission, which are looking into whether "certain business activities in a foreign country" are in violation of U.S. practices.

A 1977 statute prohibits companies from paying bribes to foreign officials to secure business advantages.

Stryker is cooperating with both agencies in the investigation and has hired its own outside legal counsel, according to the report.
