Orthopedic surgeon happiness outside of work has dropped 25 percent since the start of the pandemic, according to Medscape's 2023 report on physician burnout and happiness, which looked at survey data from over 9,100 practicing physicians.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, 87 percent of orthopedic surgeons reported feeling either happy or very happy outside of the workplace, according to the Feb. 24 report. Orthopedic surgeons were the third happiest specialists.

While orthopedic surgeons have remained the third happiest specialty, only 65 percent report feeling happy or very happy outside of work in 2023.
