The announcement comes after the death of Republican Rep. Don Young, Alaska’s longest-serving member of Congress.
Dr. Gross’ campaign said he would file on April 1 to run as a candidate to finish Mr. Young’s remaining term and to seek a two-year term.
The surgeon, who is running as an independent, is the first person to officially declare his candidacy, but several others are reported to be considering a run, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, according to the Press.
