16 of the largest orthopedic hospitals, surgical facilities in the works

Construction is booming in orthopedics as many hospital expansions and surgical facilities pick up steam in 2021. Here are 16 of the largest orthopedic projects in the works across the U.S.:

1. A group of 29 orthopedic surgeons received approval in July for a 24-bed orthopedic surgical hospital in Delray Beach, Fla. Construction of the 120,000-square-foot South Florida Spine and Orthopedic Institute will begin in the first quarter of 2022 and take about two years to complete.

2. Christus Good Shepherd Health System broke ground in July on a $35 million project that will expand its NorthPark campus and create the first orthopedic institute in Longview, Texas. Construction is set to begin in August and be complete by fall 2022.

3. Centura Health broke ground in May on a $160 million hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., that will specialize in spine and orthopedic care. St. Clare Hospital will include 64 inpatient beds, 10 operating rooms with robotic technology and 30 beds for pre- and postoperative care. The hospital is slated to open in March 2023.

4. Akron, Ohio-based Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center is opening a $100 million hospital for orthopedic, reconstructive and plastic surgery in the fall. The 165,000-square-foot facility in Fairlawn, Ohio, will include 60 private patient rooms and 12 operating rooms equipped with Stryker's Mako system and the ExactechGPS system for joint replacement procedures.

5. Cheektowaga, N.Y.-based UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine is working with Buffalo, N.Y.-based Kaleida Health to finalize plans for a $100 million medical office building and surgery center. Brian McGrath, MD, a total joint specialist, is leading the project for the 40-physician group.

6. Phoenix-based Banner Health plans to develop a $54 million orthopedic sports medicine center in Scottsdale, Ariz. The center, expected to open in late 2022, will include a surgery center and physical therapy, imaging and concussion centers.

7. Penrose-St. Francis Health Services in Colorado Springs, Colo., is building a $150 million spine and orthopedic hospital. The 72-bed hospital will have 10 operating rooms and include a medical office building and a surgery center. The facility is expected to open in January 2023.

8. In February, Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth broke ground on a $100 million medical office building that will be Rothman Orthopaedic Institute's Florida headquarters. The 12-story, 300,000-square-foot facility will be at AdventHealth's Health Village campus in Orlando, Fla.

9. Grand Blanc, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care is injecting an additional $150 million into a health campus that will feature an orthopedic hospital in Lansing, Mich. The cash injection upped the cost of the project to $600 million. McLaren plans to open the hospital at the end of the year.

10. ThedaCare is building a $144 million Orthopedic, Spine and Pain Center in Appleton, Wis. The facility will feature medical offices, a specialty surgery center and an orthopedic and spine hospital. Construction is set for completion in summer 2022.

11. Orlando (Fla.) Health Jewett Orthopedic Hospital, a $250 million orthopedic hospital, is under construction. It will feature 12 large outpatient operating rooms, 66 outpatient exam rooms and up to 75 beds. The center is expected to open in 2023.

12. The $250 million Orthopedic & Spine Tower at Huntsville (Ala.) Hospital is on course to open in summer 2021. The facility will feature 24 operating rooms, 72 patient rooms and house the hospital's program for joint replacement patients.

13. Parkview Medical Center broke ground on a $58 million orthopedic hospital in Pueblo West, Colo., in November. Expected to open in April 2022, the hospital will have 30 beds and free up to 20 beds at the main campus in Pueblo, Colo.

14. The University of Rochester (N.Y.) is building a $240 million orthopedic campus at the Marketplace Mall in Rochester. The center will feature an ASC with a multistory tower above the operating rooms. It is expected to open in 2023.

15. Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health is developing a 12-operating room orthopedic hospital and two clinics as part of a $209.5 million expansion. Construction will begin next summer, and the hospital's opening is expected by 2023.  

16. Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, is building a six-story spine and orthopedic tower that will cost $120 million. The center will treat spine, cranial neurosurgery and complex orthopedic trauma patients and will open by the first quarter of 2022.
