Here are 10 orthopedic surgeons to know:

Richard Bartholomew, MD. Bone and Joint Specialists (Waterford Township, Mich.). Dr. Bartholomew is a shoulder and knee specialist focusing on joint replacement and reconstruction and minimally invasive procedures. He was chief resident during his training at St. John Oakland Hospital in Madison Heights, Mich.

Ravi Bashyal, MD. Northshore Orthopaedic & Spine Institute (Skokie, Ill.). Dr. Bashyal specializes in minimally invasive hip and knee replacements. He volunteers with Operation Walk Chicago, a charity that provides free hip and knee replacements to patients globally.

Darwin Chen, MD. Mount Sinai Hospital (New York City). Dr. Chen specializes in hip and knee replacement. He's an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital and was named teacher of the year by the Mount Sinai orthopedic residency program in 2017.

Thomas Ferro, MD. Bone and Joint Center (Arroyo Grande, Calif.). Dr. Ferro is the medical director of the Bone & Joint Center and is a leader in joint replacement in the central coast of California. He received his medical degree and completed his residency at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine.

Geoffrey Konopka, MD. UT Physicians (Houston). Dr. Konopka specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery. He received his medical degree at New York City-based Columbia University Valegos College of Physicians and Surgeons where he won an award for his orthopedic research.

Bryan Mills, MD. Advanced Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine (Houston). Dr. Mills is a hand and wrist surgeon whose clinical interests include carpal tunnel syndrome, fractures and tendon injuries. He chose the hand and wrist specialty because of their importance in a patient's daily life and since it's an intricate part of the body.

Gordon Nuber, MD. Northshore Orthopaedics (Chicago). Dr. Nuber specializes in sports-related and traumatic orthopedic injuries. He's also a professor of clinical orthopedic surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.

Rajiv Rajani, MD. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso. Dr. Rajani was recently named chair of orthopedics at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso. He specializes in metastatic bone disease, total joint replacements and hip and knee reconstruction.

Thomas Throckmorton, MD. Campbell Clinic (Memphis, Tenn.). Dr. Throckmorton is an elbow and shoulder surgeon, and he's practiced with Campbell Clinic since 2009. He was recently appointed editor-in-chief of OrthoInfo.org, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' patient education website.

James Wittig, MD. Atlantic Health System (Morristown, N.J.). Dr. Wittig is chair of the orthopedic department at Morristown Medical Center and medical director of orthopedic oncology at Atlantic Health System. He's one of about 100 orthopedic oncologists in the nation and is recognized for his work treating bone and soft tissue cancers.
