Facts on the top 10 orthopedic hospitals, per US News & World Report

U.S. News & World Report recognizes top hospitals in orthopedics every year based on data gathered from the hospitals.

The hospitals are measured on several benchmarks, including 30-day survival rate, patient discharges home and the number of high-risk patients treated in orthopedics over a three-year period from 2018 to 2020. U.S. News also takes patient experience, technology and nurse staffing into consideration.

Here are five things to know about each of the top 10 hospitals for orthopedics.

Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City)

1. Hospital for Special Surgery was founded in 1863 and is focused on orthopedics and musculoskeletal disorders.

2. U.S. News & World Report has ranked the hospital No. 1 in the nation for orthopedics for the last 11 consecutive years.

3. Surgeons perform more than 35,300 surgical procedures at the 205-bed hospital annually. The hospital also has a research program with a $49 million operating budget.

4. Hospital for special surgery has 51 operating rooms and 380 members on the active medical staff.

5. Lou Shapiro is president and CEO of the hospital. Bryan Kelly, MD, is the surgeon-in-chief and medical director.

Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.)

1. The W. Hall Wendel Jr. Musculoskeletal Center brings together Mayo's multidisciplinary orthopedic specialists at the MInnesota campus. The 245,000-square-foot center opened in 2007 and has 57 examination rooms as well as an outpatient surgery center.

2. Mayo's orthopedic research is robust. More than 20 physicians and scientists from the orthopedic surgery department receive about $7 million in annual funding per year.

3. The health system's orthopedic surgeons and scientists are engaged in 94 open studies.

4. The orthopedic department at Mayo's Rochester campus includes 60 physicians.

5. Daniel Berry, MD, is chair of orthopedic surgery at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles)

1. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is affiliated with Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, which provides care for the Los Angeles LA Dodgers and Los Angeles Clippers.

2. The orthopedic team provides care for adults and children over the age of 13. It also offers physical therapy and outpatient joint replacements.

3. Mark Vrahas, MD, is the Levin/Gordon DIstinguished Chair in Orthopaedics at Cedars-Sinai. Sonu Ahluwalia, MD, is clinical chief in the department of orthopedic surgery.

4. More than 600 medical students apply for the four orthopedic residency program slots at Cedars-Sinai each year. The hospital also has fellowship programs in orthopedic trauma, foot and ankle surgery, spine surgery and sports medicine.

5. Iin 2018, the hospital reported 1.8 percent complication rate for hip and knee replacements, well below the 2.5 percent national average.

NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital (New York City)

1. The NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, previously known as the Hospital for Joint Diseases, cares for tens of thousands of patients each year.

2. The hospital's surgeons have performed more than 1,500 same-day joint replacements.

3. David Dibner is senior vice president of NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, Musculoskeletal and Rusk Rehabilitation. H. Michael Belmont, MD, is medical director.

4. The hospital received Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

5. NYU Langone has more than 400 orthopedists, rheumatologists, neurologists, physiatrists, radiologists, pain physicians and other medical and support staff on its musculoskeletal team.

Rush University Medical Center (Chicago)

1. Orthopedic care at Rush is offered through Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, Castle Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and Romano Orthopaedic Center.

2. The hospital offers minimally invasive procedures, biologic treatments, computer modeling and navigation as well as customized implants.

3. Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush is the team physician for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls and Chicago Fire professional soccer team.

4. Joshua Jacob, MD, is the chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery at Rush University Medical Center. Brian Cole, MD, is the chairman of the department of surgery at Rush Oak Park Hospital, and Frank Phillips, MD, is the director of the division of spine surgery.

5. The department of orthopedic surgery at Rush also focuses on research and in 2018 received $3 million in external research awards.

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (New York City)

1. NewYork-Persbyterian is affiliated with Columbia Orthopaedics and HSS at NewYork-Persbyterian Weill Cornell Medicine to offer orthopedic and spine surgery, sports medicine and trauma care.

2. The hospital includes robotically assisted procedures and, EOS imaging. and sSurgeons have an expertise in anterior hip replacement.

3. William Levine, MD, is chair of the department of orthopedics at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Jeffrey Geller, MD, Jeffrey Rosen, MD, R. Kumar Kadiyala, MD, and Nichole Belkin, MD, all chair orthopedic departments at the system's hospitals.

4. The health system's department of orthopedic surgery has a specialized division for orthopedic oncology.

5. The NewYork-Presbyterian Och Spine hospital helped lead the health system to a top 10 hospital for orthopedics in the nation and a No. 3 hospital for neurology and neurosurgery by U.S. News & World Report in 2020-21.

UCLA / Orthopaedic Hospital

1. The UCLA / Orthopedic hospital earned the Blue Distinction Center designation for knee and hip replacement from Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.

2. The health system's faculty is dedicated to orthopedic research and is ranked No. 8 in the most orthopedic surgery research funding from the National Institutes of Health.

3. The UCLA / Orthopaedic Hospital Department of Orthopaedic Surgery opened a 35,000- square-foot Orthopaedic Hospital Research Center in 2007.

4. Francis Hornicek, MD, PhD, is chair of orthopedics at UCLA and Anthony Scaduto, MD, is executive vice chair of the division and chief of pediatric orthopedics.

5. UCLA Health also provides musculoskeletal services to the Veterans Administration Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, Orthopaedic Institute for Children and Shriners Hospital for children in Los Angeles.

Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston)

1. Massachusetts General Hospital has earned the Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacement surgery as well as spine surgery designation from Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.

2. The hospital has a specialized center to treat patients who have issues with metal-on-metal total hip replacements.

3. The hospital's sports medicine physicians care for the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and Boston Bruins.

4. The orthopedic surgery department includes 63 physicians who see around 80,000 patients per year.

5. William Tomford, MD, is the interim chief of the Center for Hip & Knee Replacement at Massachusetts General Hospital. Peter Asnis, MD, is the director of professional sports at Mass General Brigham, the hospital's health system.

Cleveland Clinic

1. Orthopedic surgeons at Cleveland Clinic perform more than 7,000 joint replacements per year.

2. Its surgeons have developed advanced techniques for fracture healing, tissue engineering and biological enhancement for cartilage and ligament repair, and artificial joint implants.

3. Brendan Patterson, MD, is the interim chair of the Orthopaedic and Rheumatologic Institute at Cleveland Clinic and chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery.

4. Cleveland Clinic surgeons can use robotic technology for joint replacements for more precise procedures.

5. Sports medicine physicians at Cleveland Clinic care for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Indians as well as collegiate athletes.

Scripps La Jolla (Calif.) Hospitals

1. The orthopedic department at Scripps includes subspecialists in joint replacement and reconstruction and sports medicine.

2. Orthopedic surgeons at Scripps have access to robotic technology to perform total and partial knee replacements.

3. All together, Scripps has 15 physicians in the orthopedics department.

4. Scripps also focuses on research with the Shiley Center for Orthopaedic Research and Education, which focuses on development for artificial cartilage, testing new devices and surgical techniques.

5. Scripps earned the Blue Distinction Center for orthopedic care designation from Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.
