Urologist shot by former patient in murder-suicide: 5 things to know

Yesterday a male shooter shot Elbert Goodier III, MD, in the head near his office at East Jefferson General Hospital in Matairie, La., according to a NOLA report.

The patient killed Dr. Goodier before turning the gun on himself. Here are five things to know:

 

1. The shooter approached Dr. Goodier at his office while he was treating another patient. He shot Dr. Goodier in the head without provocation, according to the report, and then ran away.

 

2. After the shooting, the shooter ran to a nearby Wendy’s where multiple deputies gathered to arrest him. When the deputies made eye contact with the shooter, he fatally shot himself.

 

3. The shooter was a former patient of Dr. Goodier, who previously treated him in the office where the shooting took place, according to a separate NOLA report.

 

4. The shooter was a male in his early 70s with no prior history of violence. However, his family reports mental illness. There were several emergency calls from the East Jefferson Medical Office Building after the shooting yesterday afternoon.

 

5. Dr. Goodier earned his medical degree at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed his residency at Ochsner Medical Center.
