Dr. Michael Gross: I’m a member of the 14 man subspecialty orthopedic group. It became apparent early on, once the group expanded past six physicians that it would be important to identify who in our organization would make the leadership decisions with respect to our professional direction. The individuals in our office that we chose are Dr. Jack McCarthy, with able assistance by his younger partners Dr. Scott McMullen and Dr. Eric Otterberg.

A major decision that the leadership of our office made was to build a subspecialty surgical hospital in conjunction with the high quality neurosurgical group in Omaha Nebraska, the Midwest Surgical Hospital. This was a daunting task that took a great deal of judgment from our leadership as well as their personal time. The motivating factor for this decision revolved more than anything around control, with a secondary issue of financial security. We work in what has been the strongest medical system in our metropolitan area, yet over the past seven years we’ve lost two CEOs of this medical system due to loss of staff competence in their decision-making. It became clear to our group, as well as the neurosurgical group, that if our future was to be secure, it would best be under our control. It was with these thoughts in mind that Dr. Steve Doran, the lead physician of the neurosurgical group, worked with Dr. McCarthy to build what has been a successful subspecialty hospital that not only offers the best care but also has offered a great deal of control and financial security to the members of both groups.

On a personal basis, as a member of the shoulder subspecialty group within our practice, we have started a retrospective study to assess our patient algorithm for shoulder diagnosis. This is coupled with all the costs generated, the reimbursement for each and an outcomes tool. The results of these endeavors will be used to change patient care as we go forward.
