Four things to know:

1. A staff member at the office of Ronald Snyder, MD, reported an office computer had ransomware on Jan. 9. The office staff couldn’t access patient files from the initial spot, but they were able to restore files from a backup server.

2. Dr. Snyder conducted an investigation with a computer forensics firm but was unable to figure out whether anyone inappropriately accessed the patient records on the affected computer. There is no evidence to suggest anyone accessed the data inappropriately.

3. The server encrypted by malware included patient information such as names, addresses, birth dates, telephone numbers and insurance identification numbers for some patients.

4. Dr. Snyder is reviewing the practice’s policies and procedures as well as implementing additional safeguards against future incidences. He also offered individuals affected one year of identity restoration services.
