George Paletta, MD, is proposing an orthopedic-driven surgery center be built in Chesterfiled, Mo., but his initiative is being met by resistance from area hospital executives, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Dr. Paletta, who works for two area orthopedic practices and is the team physician for the St. Louis Cardinals, has talked to city officials about building a surgery center where six patients could stay up to three nights for surgery and observation.

But hospital executives argue before overnight stays can be allowed at such facilities, physicians should meet all hospital licensing requirements or be given an unfair competitive advantage.
