New Media Becoming a Staple in Promoting Spine Service

Investing and engaging in new media such as Facebook and Twitter helps promote spine services to patients, said Marcus Williamson, president of Symbion Neospine Division, at the 9th Annual Orthopedic, Spine and Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference in Chicago on June 10.

Mr. Williamson said providing information on cervical fusions, lumbar fusions and artificial disc placements to the local community goes beyond just creating a website. He noted that based on his company’s research, a person will look at nine spine physicians before actually choosing one, and that’s where “Web 2.0” – or conversational web interaction – comes into play.

Social networking sites, Mr. Williamson said, should be utilized in different ways. He said Facebook should be used only for patient testimonials, while Twitter, which has grown by 1,382 percent from Feb. 2008-Feb. 2009, can be used as a quick base to educate prospective patients.

“Accent the practice, go beyond delivering general information, remain neutral, provide education and use your sites as an introduction,” Mr. Williamson said.
