Three insights:
1. Proton beam therapy — a cancer treatment that increases the precision of radiation therapy with less toxicity and side effects on patients — was introduced at Mayo’s Rochester, Minn.-based campus in 2015 and Phoenix campus in 2016.
2. The treatment is used for tumors of the spine, brain and neck among others. It targets tumors close to or inside vital organs and is beneficial for young patients whose organs are still developing.
3. The 140,000-square-foot center will be completed in 2023.
