In 2025, six orthopedic practices announced and/or completed closures.
1. The Orthopedic Institute in Sioux Falls, S.D., will close its doors after 20 years in order to relocate to Tea, S.D.
2. Mobile-based Alabama Orthopaedic Clinic closed April 11. Barry Porter, the clinic’s CEO, cited several physicians retiring, difficulties recruiting new physicians in sub-specialities and rising costs for the closure.
3. Albany, Ga.-based Orthopaedic Associates closed its doors permanently on April 30, citing increasing costs and declining reimbursements. On Jan. 10, the practice stopped seeing new patients and ended all surgeries on Jan. 30.
4. Jacksonville (Fla.) Orthopaedic Institute laid off more than 150 employees and closed six clinic locations amid a physician buyout of Jacksonville-based Baptist Health. Baptist plans to retain five of Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute’s 12 rehab locations.
5. Columbus (Ind.) Regional Health is closing its outpatient orthopedics and sports medicine practice due to financial hardships. The organization’s executive leadership and board of trustees determined that CRH was no longer able to cost-effectively provide orthopedic and sports medicine services and that similar services are readily available in the area from other provider. Economic challenges cited for the closing include rising supply costs, federal and state funding cuts, and delayed and low reimbursements.
6. Ashland (Ore.) Orthopedics is set to close as Asante Ashland Community Hospital transitions to a satellite campus next year. Asante gave 90-day notices to orthopedic staff on Dec. 4, and closure is expected by March 4. Asante Ashland Community Hospital will transition to a satellite campus by spring 2026.
