At HIMSS16, Stephen Grimes, principal consultant at Strategic Healthcare Technology Associates, discussed why hospitals should prioritize device safety.

Here are four key points:

1. Medical devices have become more computerized, equipped with more features containing more data. The computerization of devices has given hackers more opportunities to obtain patient information.

2. Mr. Grimes said the industry lacks “efficient standards for integrating medical devices…especially when related to security.”

3. Cybercriminals put patients lives at risk as their breach could affect the device’s data availability or integrity.

4. To better assess the security of devices, Mr. Grimes recommends hospitals fully understand the scope and nature of their medical device inventory.
