Here are six things to know:
1. Healthcare reform and patient access to joint replacement surgery were the main issues discussed in the meeting.
2. As healthcare undergoes dramatic changes, the physicians advocated for a “value based” approach to promote better outcomes, fewer complications and more economical delivery of care for patients.
3. A notable downside of “value based” models is that they discourage providers from treating complex, high-risk patients.
4. The physicians and legislators discussed ways inclusive alternative models and health optimization programs can help prevent patients from being denied care.
5. Three surgeons from Charlotte, N.C.-based OrthoCarolina Hip and Knee were among the physician delegation: Brian Curtin, MD, is AAHKS’ current membership chair; Bo Mason, MD, is an AAHKS board member; and Bryan Springer, MD, serves as AAHKS’ education council chair.
6. AAHKS has advocated on behalf of hip and knee patient care since 1991.
