The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has established the AAOS Orthobiologics Registry to measure the long-term safety, efficacy and outcomes, according to a Dec. 5 news release.

The registry is designed to collect data for orthobiologics therapies for patients with knee osteoarthritis. The pilot program will begin with 10 sites and plans for methodical expansion over the next three to five years.

“As orthobiologics continue to grow in popularity, we’re at a critical juncture where we need facts, not fiction, about their effectiveness,” Jason Dragoo, MD, chair of the AAOS OBR and AAOS Committee of Devices, Biologics and Technology, said in the release. “This registry will help us understand which patients benefit most from these therapies and under what circumstances, ultimately guiding orthopaedic surgeons in providing the highest quality, evidence-based care to their patients dealing with osteoarthritis of the knee.”
