Today, spine surgeons and their patients face several threats from new industry trends, including prior authorization denials, artificial intelligence and increased care provided by non-physician providers. 

By 2033, the Association of American Medical Colleges predicts that there will be a shortage of 12,500 anesthesiologists, nearly 30% of the current staff, according to a report  from Medicus Healthcare Solutions. 

Two spine surgeons in Pueblo, Colo., have added a robotic spinal guidance system, the Mazor X, according to a Feb. 18 report from CBS affiliate KKTV.

Topp Spine & Orthopaedics has relocated its practice to St. Simons Island, Ga., according to a Feb. 15 report from The Brunswick News.

No industry is immune to inflation, including the musculoskeletal field. In just 30 days, three major orthopedic and spine companies have laid off fractions of their workforce. 

Orthopedic surgeon salaries far surpass some of the other highest paying careers in the U.S., with orthopedists earning $371,400 annually, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics' most recent salary data.
