Johnson & Johnson spent a whopping $7.55 billion, coming in second behind eye care-developer Alcon, which spent more than $9.5 billion. Meanwhile, Medtronic spent a reported $1.5 billion.
The average amount spent on research and development projects last year was $540 million.
