Riley Williams III, MD, has been named venue medical officer for the 2026 World Cup at the New York/New Jersey location.
In the role, Dr. Williams will serve as a liaison between FIFA and local medical providers and coordinate care for athletes and officials, according to a June 3 news release from the Hospital for Special Surgery.
The New York/New Jersey location will host eight World Cup matches, including the final.
Dr. Williams is a sports medicine surgeon and chief of the HSS Sports Medicine Institute. He also serves as medical director and head team orthopedic surgeon for the Brooklyn Nets of the NBA, the New York Liberty of the WNBA and the New York Red Bulls of MLS.
HSS is one of three hospitals in the U.S. that are designated as a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence, the release said.
