Flagstaff, Ariz.-based Northern Arizona Healthcare performed its first Keri TOUCH CMC 1 thumb prosthesis implant surgery at Flagstaff Medical Center.
Peter Gibson, MD, completed the procedure and is the first surgeon in Arizona to use the implant, which is the first of its kind being used in the United States, according to an April 24 news release.
The FDA-approved device is designed to treat osteoarthritis at the base of the thumb by replacing the joint while preserving bone. The procedure aims to improve function, reduce pain and shorten recovery time.
Recovery from the surgery typically allows patients to return to light activity within two to four weeks and heavier activity within two to three months, compared to six weeks of immobilization with traditional tendon reconstruction surgery.
At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 11-13 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
