Carlsmed’s personalized spine implant used in 1st cervical fusion

Joseph Osorio, MD, PhD, performed the first cervical spine surgery using Carlsmed’s aprevo device, the company said July 28.

The aprevo devices are designed with Carlsmed’s proprietary artificial intelligence surgical planning platform to match the unique anatomical and alignment needs of each patient, according to a news release.

Dr. Osorio, chief of spine surgery at UC San Diego Health, performed the milestone surgery on July 14. He also used aprevo for lumbar spinal fusions.

“Leveraging the aprevo system for cervical fusion surgery allows a level of alignment which I believe is not achievable with traditional implants,” he said in the release. “The ability to customize each device to the patient’s unique pathology and anatomy represents a meaningful advancement for my practice.”

Carlsmed’s aprevo earned the FDA’s breakthrough device designation and expects a commercial launch for the device in 2026.
