Researchers at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland University of Medicine and Health Sciences have developed a 3D-printed implant that delivers electrical stimulation to spinal cord injuries, potentially promoting nerve regrowth.
Lab tests showed the device was able to deliver electrical signals to neurons and stem cells, enhancing their ability to regrow, according to a July 15 news release.
The implant, made with nanomaterials from Trinity College Dublin’s AMBER Centre, mimics the structure of the spinal cord.
The study was supported by the IRFU Charitable Trust, AMBER and the Irish Research Council. Findings were published in Advanced Science.
