Dr. David Altchek dies at 68

Orthopedic surgeon and longtime New York Mets team physician David Altchek, MD, has died, New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery, said in a July 17 LinkedIn post.

“Known for his technical brilliance and pioneering work in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Altchek had a profoundly positive impact on our organization,” the post said. “His legacy endures among the thousands of grateful patients whose lives he touched with skill and compassion, and among the many surgeons around the world who carry forward his knowledge and example.”  

Dr. Altchek, who earned HSS’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, was co-chief emeritus of sports medicine and shoulder service. 

Dr. Altcheck, 68, was also a prominent figure within the New York Mets, The Athletic reported. He joined the Mets in 1991 as head team physician for 11 years and returned in 2005 as medical director. Dr. Altcheck operated on numerous athletes including Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler.

The cause of Dr. Altchek’s death hasn’t been announced, but he previously told colleagues that he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, The Athletic reported.
