Peter Sultan, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, N.Y., died July 13 at age 54, Riverhead Local reported July 15.
Dr. Sultan died unexpectedly while competing in a triathlon, the report said. He worked at Peconic Bay Medical Center for 20 years as a hip and knee replacement surgeon.
“Peter was one of Long Island’s top orthopedic surgeons,” the hospital’s former President and CEO Andrew Mitchell, said in the report. “He truly cared about his patients, the East End communities where he lived, and the continued advancement of PBMC into a highly regarded regional medical center.”
The hospital’s executive director, Amy Loeb, echoed Mr. Mitchell. Dr. Sultan was the hospital’s first orthopedic hire and key in growing its service line.
“Orthopedics really is the service that changed the hospital,” Ms. Loeb said in the report. “He took a chance on us as a hospital and as a community and really built the hospital, and started to turn the reputation of the hospital around. Patient by patient, he changed lives.”
He is survived by his two children, parents and three sisters, according to an obituary.
