What Arthrex, DePuy Synthes & more paid physicians last year

Zimmer Biomet paid the most to physicians, providers and hospitals last year, according to CMS Open Payments Data.

CMS gathers and reports data on the general, research and ownership / investment interest medical device companies pay to hospitals and physicians each year. The payments include royalties and licensure, consulting fees, travel and lodging, debt forgiveness, food and beverage and education, among other things.

All together, the top five orthopedic focused device companies paid $456.5 million to physicians last year. Here is the breakdown by company.

1. Zimmer Biomet: $134 million
2. Arthrex: $114.1 million
3. Stryker: $110.8 million
4. DePuy Synthes: $58.6 million
5. Smith+Nephew: $39 million
