Three spine surgeons have been at the forefront, debuting two or more new technologies since 2021.

Sebastian Koga, MD

Aurora Spine announced two of Dr. Koga’s spine device debuts in 2022. The first was on Jan. 25, and Dr. Koga debuted the Apollo cervical plate. He completed three consecutive cases in one day.

The other device was the Dexa-C implant, Aurora Spine said March 3. The implants are matched to a patient’s bone density and are designed for anterior cervical discectomy with fusions.

Mark McFarland, DO

Dr. McFarland performed the first kyphoplasty with Stryker’s SpineJack system in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. The patient was a 90-year-old woman, and she was able to go home on the same day after the one-hour procedure.

He performed the region’s first surgery with the Globus Sable expandable lumbar interbody cage, another outpatient procedure.

The third recent technology he debuted in the region was Medacta’s MySpine patient-specific navigation system.

James Lynch, MD

Dr. Lynch debuted 4Web Medical’s Lumbar Spine Plating Solution in Nevada.

He also performed the first spine surgery with Augmedics’ augmented reality navigation system, Xvision using the Perc Pin.
