1. Smith+Nephew acquired Integra LifeSciences’ extremity orthopedics business for $240 million in January. The deal strengthens Smith+Nephew’s orthopedic line and includes a shoulder replacement system expected to launch in 2022.
2. NuVasive acquired Simplify Medical for more than $150 million in February. Simplify’s artificial disc for cervical disc replacement was included in the deal and has since been approved by the FDA for two-level procedures.
3. SeaSpine’s $110 million acquisition of 7D Surgical closed in May, and the deal propelled the radiation-free Flash navigation system into the market. Applications for the system have expanded to include minimally invasive spine surgery.
4. Alphatec sealed its $116.9 million acquisition of EOS Imaging in June. The companies are combining their U.S. sales teams to create a capital and spine hardware distribution network. EOS’ 3D surgical planning platform is designed to help surgeons assess a patient’s full body alignment for surgical planning.
5. Bioventus entered into an agreement to acquire Misonix for $518 million in July. The deal is expected to accelerate Misonix’s BoneScalpel and Nexus adoption and extend its international access. It will also augment Bioventus’ lower extremity offerings and commercial footprint.
6. DePuy Synthes, Johnson & Johnson’s orthopedics company acquired 100 percent of OrthoSpin in November. The $79.5 million deal includes OrthoSpin’s digitally enabled strut system, AutoStrut G2. The robot automates strut adjustments for external circular fixation.
