Four key notes:
1. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education decided to terminate DMC’s neurosurgery residency as of June 2020 following an inspection. Two anonymous DMC physicians prompted the investigation.
2. After the council announced its decision in September, DMC’s Graduate Medical Education Committee voted to let the program close. However, it now plans to appeal the council’s decision and work with a new academic partner, possibly Wayne State University.
3. The program includes 14 neurosurgery residents and recently made changes, including appointing a new leader.
4. DMC CEO Tony Tedeschi, MD, said in a statement that the hospital intends to reapply and re-establish the program if the appeal is unsuccessful.
