Michigan neurosurgeons offer Gamma Knife treatment for brain tumors — 3 things to know

Neurosurgeons at Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit adapted the Leksell Gamma Knife Icon treatment for brain tumors.

Three things to know:

1. Leksell Gamma Knife Icon is a stereotactic radiosurgery system that treats intracranial areas such as the brain, brain stem or trigeminal nerve.

2. It uses radiation beams to accurately target the tumor and preserve the adjacent healthy tissue.

3. BAKCI neurosurgeons have treated 22 patients with the technology since its adaption in June.
