UPMC Researcher Patent Implant-Monitoring Chips

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have patented a wireless chip designed to track and monitor surgical implants, according to a CMIO report.

The chip is attached to orthopedic devices so surgeons can obtain information about the implants more easily. The implant can tell the physicians about the pressure of the implant, the chemical balance, temperature of the surrounding tissue and identify harmful organisms.
