Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama joins several other Blues plans and payers that have approved coverage for minimally invasive SI joint fusion in the past 24 months.
Three things to know:
1. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama’s updated coverage decision expands coverage to minimally invasive SI joint fusions for patients with SI joint pain or dysfunction. The new coverage decision went into effect March 18.
2. As the largest healthcare benefits provider in Alabama, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama will cover minimally invasive IS joint fusions that include FDA-approved devices, such as SI-BONE or RTI Surgical’s implants.
3. The payers cited multiple studies as well as clinical evidence guidelines from the North American Spine Society and the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery in their coverage decision.
