Five things to know:
1. The collaboration will focus on improving outcomes while also reducing costs. In South Carolina, the projected total cost of chronic disease from 2016 to 2030 is $687 billion, and the partnership aims to address both chronic and acute conditions in the state.
2. In addition to further a partnership that creates a comprehensive vascular disease care pathway, the organizations aim to standardize a joint replacement care pathway program to address the CMS bundled payment methodology. The episodic care pathway aims to establish best practices and streamline processes for quality care improvement; it will also focus on lowering costs.
3. MUSC and Medtronic aim to educate healthcare professionals on value-based care. “The strategic partnership with Medtronic is based on our shared vision and drive to lead the transformation of healthcare delivery,” said MUSC President David Cole, MD. “It’s about providing what’s best for our patients. The mutual goal of our organizations is to deliver the best patient outcomes at the lowest cost possible.”
4. Medtronic also has a partnership with Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Health Network, which focuses on improving patient care for 70-plus major medical conditions. This partnership will inform how Medtronic partners with MUSC to implement similar value-based programs.
5. Under the partnership, MUSC and Medtronic plan to cross-share learnings with their partners — which on the MUSC side includes Siemens Healthineers — to further value-based initiatives.
