Here are three things to know:

1. Mr. Marino told President Donald Trump he was withdrawing, which President Trump later tweeted Oct. 17.

2. The withdrawal comes after The Washington Post and CBS published an investigation Oct. 15 into Mr. Marino’s role in pushing a law that supported the drug industry. Specifically, the 2016 law eased prescription narcotic delivery.

3. Following the publication, critics voiced concern over Mr. Marino’s commitment to curbing opioid abuse. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., both turned to President Trump to revoke the nomination.
