Here are six things to know:
1. Dr. Adams received the Senate’s full consent, but the nomination didn’t undergo a full floor vote.
2. President Donald Trump nominated Dr. Adams for the position on June 29, as a replacement for the former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD. Mr. Trump dismissed Dr. Murthy in April.
3. As surgeon general, Dr. Adams will head the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
4. As surgeon general, Dr. Adams said he will prioritize fighting the opioid epidemic.
5. In October 2014, Vice President Mike Pence appointed Dr. Adams to his current position of the state health commissioner of Indiana.
6. He also serves as a clinical anesthesia assistant professor at Indianapolis-based Indiana University School of Medicine, and a staff anesthesiologist at Indianapolis-based Eskenazi Health.
