OREF president reveals key to advancing orthopedic research

Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation President David G. Lewallen, MD, of Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic reflected on the organization’s success over the past year.

Here are four details:

 

1. Dr. Lewallen is most proud of OREF’s increased collaboration with others over the past year.

 

2. He cited the following as indicators of this year’s success:

 

  • A resident gift matching program with Switzerland-based Medacta International
  • A matching research fund gift program with Warsaw, Ind.-based Zimmer Biomet
  • Additional funding from the National Stem Cell Foundation in support of James R. Urbaniak, MD, Mentor Campaign
  • New partnerships with the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, Anesthesia Patient
  • Safety Foundation, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Cigna Foundation

 

3. Additionally Dr. Lewallen revealed OREF’s mentor campaigns have raised over $2.8 million for research to honor respected orthopedic surgeons with help from honorees James R. Andrews, MD, and Russell F. Warren, MD.

 

4. He highlighted the importance of the OREF annual fund in providing grant programs, services and training to hundreds of investigators to pursue orthopedic research.
