1. A JAMA Viewpoint article claims physicians should be fully aware when their patients are recording their conversations, and the physicians should educate the patient about “privacy rights of other patients so as to avoid any violations.”
2. A contrasting viewpoint argues if a patient feels the need to record their physician visit, their relationship is already in turmoil and the patient should consider a different provider.
3. Jeremy Brown, MD, director of emergency care research at the National Institutes of Health, stated emergency physicians should have body cameras so they can readily record patient encounters.
4. However, recording an interaction may overwhelm a large majority of both patients and their providers.
5. Taping conversations also leaves many unanswered questions, including:
• Who owns the rights to the videos?
• What technology can store all the recorded encounters?
• How will this impact physician performance?
