Lack of Health IT integration may hurt patient safety: 6 considerations

Health IT information flow is not living up to expectations, based on a Nielsen Strategic Health Perspectives and Council of Accountable Physician Practices survey, according to HealthData Management.

The survey received responses from 30,000 consumers and 626 physicians.

Here are six considerations:

1. The survey found disconnect between what patients expect and what providers offer.

2. Only 49 percent of physicians with electronic health records reported they are able to share those records electronically with other providers outside of their practices.

3. This lack of integration is troubling, as patient information is incomplete from one provider to the next, allowing vital information to be overlooked.

4. About 64 percent of physicians with EHRs said they receive hospital discharge summaries.

5. Less than half of surveyed patients reported their physicians are able to obtain their medical history before their appointments.

6. About 42 percent of patients surveyed said they are able to access online information, including appointment scheduling and lab test results.
