Here are five key notes:
1. The acquisition includes SafeWire’s Y-Wire guidewire and Tiger Jamshindi Needle Family for minimally invasive spine surgery. The Y-Wire includes a patented feature for mitigating potential wire-based complications including accidental pullout, kinking or wire migration.
2. The Y-Wire is designed for optimizing workflow during minimally invasive spine surgery. It can also reduce patient and surgeon exposure to fluoroscopy.
3. The acquisition fits into Stryker’s plan to expand its minimally invasive spine surgery product offering.
4. Stryker launched its first cervical interbody fusion device featuring the Aero Technology at the 2016 AAOS annual meeting and received FDA clearance for the Tritanium PL posterior lumbar cage earlier this year.
5. Beyond just expanding in spine, Stryker has been growing other areas of the business as well. The company acquired Physio-Control in February for $1.28 billion as well as acquired Synergetics USA’s neuro portfolio and Sage Products from Madison Dearborn Partners.
“This acquisition increases our competitive advantage as we broaden our product line and extend our customer base among teaching facilities, competitive accounts and existing SafeWire customers,” said Brad Paddock, president of Stryker’s Spine division.
