Dr. Kevin Darr conducting cell therapy study to treat arthritis: 4 things to know

Orthopedic surgeon Kevin Darr, MD, of Covington (La.) Orthopedics, is conducting a study on cell therapy using lipogems (autologous micro-fragmented adipose tissue) to help patients with arthritis.

Here are four things to know:

 

1. LIPOGEMS Cell Therapy involves injecting a patient’s fat into the affected joint.

 

2. LIPOGEMS-process fat is equipped with regenerative abilities and growth factors. It helps reduce inflammation and mend cartilage, bone or tissue.

 

3. Board-certified in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery, Dr. Karr earned his medical degree form Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He then completed an orthopedic residency at Louisiana State University Medical Center and Charity Affiliated Hospitals and Clinics, both in New Orleans.

 

4. Dr. Karr completed his adult reconstructive surgery and sports medicine fellowship at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston.
