Learn More About West Coast Medical Resources

West Coast Medical Resources (WCMR) is a surgical surplus company founded in 1997 by Randy Ware to purchase surplus disposable surgical supplies and equipment from hospitals and surgery centers. WCMR resells these products, which have a shorter shelf-life at a reduced price. WCMR focuses on disposable surgical devices, rather than surgical equipment.

The company first began buying and selling surplus orthopedic products from arthroscopy blade conversions and surplus equipment resulting from endoscopy tower and powered instrumentation conversions. Within two years, orthopedic sports medicine products were incorporated into the company’s offerings, which are continuously expanding today. The largest segment for the company is now in the area of Endomechanical, Energy and Hernia Repair products, constituting nearly half their volume. In recent years, the company has broken into the gastric banding arena and is aggressively exploring the gynecology, ENT, spine and trauma markets for 2011.

Mr. Ware has been able to carve out a niche for his company by forming relationships with hospitals, surgery centers and surgical device sales representatives. In the past, when hospitals switched surgical device companies, the staff might throw out the previous company’s products, due to few reasonable options, losing money in the process. WCMR’s solution is to purchase this surplus and sell it to other surgical facilities who are often interested in buying in smaller quantities to improve their margins and efficiencies.

In order to keep costs down, many surgery centers only purchase the amount of surgical supplies their surgeons will need for the current week’s surgical schedule, which makes them ideal partners with WCMR.

“Surgery centers like us because they can order what they need,” says Mr. Ware. On average, surgery centers can save 10 to 30 percent by purchasing products from WCMR.

WCMR purchases and sells products from the following brands:

•    Arthrex

•    Auto Suture / Covidien
