InHealth Grants $830,000 for Research to Duke and Northwestern Universities

The Institute for Health Technology Studies has awarded grants to research teams at Northwestern University in Chicago and Duke University in Durham, N.C., totaling $830,000, according to an InHealth news release.

Duke researchers led by Linda George, PhD, Frank Sloan, PhD, and J. Alexander McMahon, will examine the lifetime benefits of implantable devices, focusing on the impact of total knee and hip replacement procedures. The team will look at the effects on multiple outcomes, including disability rates, changes in comorbidities and total Medicare expenditures.

The Northwestern research team will study opportunities for improving the FDA’s 510k product review process for medical devices, building on previous research funded by InHealth. The researchers hope to contribute to the FDA’s plans to revamp the 510k product review process.
