Non-Engaged Patients Visit ED More, Have Higher Readmissions

A new study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine reported that patients who are active in their healthcare have a lower rate of readmission within 30 days of hospital discharge.

Researchers used data from Project RED-LIT on 695 English-speaking general medical inpatient subjects and compared highly active patients with low activation patients. The low activation patients were more likely to use the emergency department 30 days after surgery as well as be readmitted to the hospital.
