University of Pennsylvania Orthopedic Productivity Climbs 8% After New Surgeon Compensation Model

After implementing a new compensation plan for surgeons at the University of Pennsylvania Health System department of orthopedic surgery, there was an 8 percent increase in productivity during the first year while using no additional resources, according to a study published in Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research.

The new compensation model was designed to provide incentive for quality and meeting academic objectives in addition to clinical performance. The new plan provides compensation for non-clinical time and funds new faculty. The plan also provides gain-sharing for improving the hospital margin.

 

While there was an 8 percent increase in productivity, the article also reported academic productivity meeting or exceeding highest reported rates for publication, national presentation and research grants per year.
