Orthopedic Sports Medicine

David Altchek, MD, co-chief of sports medicine and shoulder service at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, recently performed shoulder surgery on Indians pitching prospect Jason Knapp, according to a Cleveland Plain Dealer news report.

This was the second surgery for Mr. Knapp's right shoulder since the Indians acquired him in 2009. He began experiencing discomfort last month and sought professional opinions about treatment. After consulting with team physician Mark Schickendantz, MD, and two additional physicians, Mr. Knapp decided to undergo a stabilization procedure.

Mr. Knapp will rest for six weeks and then begin his rehabilitation program. He will be out for the rest of the season.
