Dr. Daniel Cooper performs ACL reconstruction surgery on Cub's player Kyle Schwarber — 8 key points

On April 19, orthopedic surgeon Daniel Cooper, MD, performed ACL reconstruction and repair surgery on the Chicago Cubs' left fielder and catcher Kyle Schwarber, according to News & Observer.

Here are eight key points:

 

1. In 2014, the Cubs drafted Mr. Schwarber in the first round of the MLB draft, and he made his debut in professional baseball during the 2015 season.

 

2. After colliding with teammate Dexter Fowler on April 7, 2016, Mr. Schwarber underwent X-rays and an MRI, which uncovered he injured his left knee's anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament.

 

3. Dr. Cooper and his surgical team deemed the surgery a success, and said they did not detect any nerve damage in the knee. The Cubs expect Mr. Schwarber to begin rehab immediately at Wrigley Field.

 

4. Dr. Cooper serves as the head team physician for the Dallas Cowboys, and has been a team physician in professional sports for more than 30 combined seasons.


 
5. Dr. Cooper's practice, the Carrell Clinic in Dallas, is known for treating complex orthopedic cases.

 

6. He is the co-developer and the inventor of Stryker Endoscopy, which allows surgeons to perform arthroscopic surgery with fewer incisions than other methods. He also is a lead investigator and Scientific Advisory Board Member for Multicenter ACL Revision Study.

 

7. In 2013, the National Football League presented Dr. Cooper with the Jerry "Hawk" Rhea Award for his work as a team physician.

 

8. After earning his medical degree from Dallas-based University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dr. Cooper underwent his orthopedic surgery residency at San Antonio-based University of Texas Health Science Center. He completed his fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
