Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Anthony Alessi, MD, is heading the University of Connecticut's NeuroSport program in Storrs, according to Norwich Bulletin.

Here are five key points:

1. Dr. Alessi is a neurologist leading a team of specialists in orthopedics, primary care and cardiology.

2. NeuroSport treats athletes with head and spinal injuries in addition to epilepsy and multiple sclerosis.

3. Dr. Alessi stresses young athletes and their parents need to take the necessary precautions to prevent concussions and other sports-related injuries. He said, "The more severe injuries oddly enough are at that young level when the brain is still developing. Yet that's been the group where we've done the least work."

4. NeuroSport has clinics on the UConn campuses, the Coast Guard Academy and Mohegan Sun in addition to its Storrs location.

5. NeuroSport is currently applying for a grant through a private foundation to educate students about concussions and track the number of concussions an athlete sustains throughout his/her career.
