Study: Adapting to ASC market a must for orthopedic device industry: 6 takeaways

Orthopedic

As the number of ambulatory surgery centers continues to increase across the United States, orthopedic device makers have to better serve the outpatient orthopedics industry to remain at the forefront, according to a study by Decision Resources Group.

Here is what you should know.

1. Medical device companies must embrace the ASC landscape to withstand competing pressures and be at the forefront of market adaptation.

2. Arthroscopic knee surgery is the most performed procedure at an ASC, according to data from the American Medical Association. Ophthalmology and orthopedics are the top two practices ASCs specialize in.

3. Decision Resources Group urges orthopedic device makers to focus on minimally invasive orthopedic devices. Clinical benefits make the devices adoptable and profitable in an ASC setting. A large portion of an ASC's market share is from patients seeking outpatient orthopedic surgeries.

4. Recognize that an ASC heavily draws from a younger patient base, and creates technology that benefits that.

5. ASCs also treat a large portion of the uninsured population. Several uninsured patients chose ASCs because of the cost savings they provide. By developing medical devices for ASCs, they could "stand to benefit from this segment."

6. Regenerative medicine has high potential in the ASC landscape, and it's expected to see growth in the future.
