Drs. Marc Mariani, Benjamin Hansen perform procedures on 1st man to climb Everest with 2 TKRs: 5 points

Marc Mariani, MD, and Benjamin Hansen, MD, performed two knee replacement surgeries on a 61-year-old mountaineer from Utah, who went on to climb Mount Everest with the replaced knees.

Here are five points:

 

1. Greg Paul, the Utah mountaineer, reached Mount Everest’s peak on May 13.

 

2. Mr. Paul underwent his first total knee replacement in 2008 in his right knee and his second in 2012 on his left knee.

 

3. Drs. Mariani and Hansen, of Salt Lake Orthopaedic Clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah, performed the procedures using Ortho Development’s Balanced Knee System.

 

4. Dr. Mariani completed an adult reconstruction/total joint replacement fellowship at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic.

 

5. Dr. Hansen completed an adult hip and knee reconstruction fellowship at Duke University in Durham, N.C.
