Utah Surgeons Perform Reverse Ankle Replacement on Pediatric Patient

Physicians in Salt Lake City recently performed a reverse ankle replacement, or rotationplasty, on a 12-year-old patient with Sarcoma, according to a KLS news report.

The patient had a portion of his leg replaced just above the knee because of the Sarcoma. His ankle joint was moved up and foot reversed for increased mobility. In 10-14 weeks, the patient will receive a prosthetic leg to fit over the natural foot, which also allows the ankle to function as a knee.

Some pediatric patients who have this procedure are able to return to normal activity and play sports.
